Scottie Scheffler pinpoints reason for poor US Open display

World number one Scottie Scheffler says he likely should have taken a break after a mentally taxing few weeks following a disappointing performance at the 2024 US Open.

Scheffler maid the claim after a forgettable showing at the third men's major of the year in North Carolina. 

The American came into the major at Pinehurst No.2 as the overwhelming tournament favourite. 

But rounds of 71, 74, 71 and 72 saw Scheffler finish on eight-over. 

At the time, it left Scheffler in a tie for 41st. 

"I couldn't hole anything," a frustrated Scheffler told reporters on Sunday evening. 

"I could not see the break on these greens. 

"The greens this week kind of had my number. 

"I felt like I hit a lot of really good putts that did weird things at the cup that I was not expecting them to do.

"When we come back here in a few years, I'll probably try to do a lot more work getting things going on the greens.

"I felt like I did a lot of my work around the greens this week, and maybe I needed to do more -- the practice greens weren't the same speed as the course, and it was hard to find something similar." 

Scheffler came into the US Open days after clinching his 14th PGA Tour title at Muirfield Village. 

Remarkably, it was his fifth victory of the calendar year. 

He contemplated not playing at Jack's place, given the protracted legal headache he faced over the traffic-related incident at last month's PGA Championship. 

Scheffler continued: "I think last week with the golf course the way it is, it probably was not the best prep work for me coming into another really challenging event. 

"I think I shot five-under the first round at Memorial, which would have been the easiest day, and after that I was maybe three-under from there on out. 

"I mean, that's pretty U.S. Open-like, and to play that many rounds, especially with what I've been dealing with the weeks leading up or really kind of the whole season, really playing a lot of good golf and being in contention, I think maybe my prep would have been a little bit better for this week if I was at home."

Though Scheffler stressed: "But I'm obviously not going to skip Jack's tournament. 

"It's a tournament I love playing. It's a tournament that I'm humbled to be the champion at."
