Jon Rahm knows exactly what went wrong at The Open

Former world number one Jon Rahm has given his verdict after coming up short in his bid to claim a third major title at the 2024 Open Championship.

Jon Rahm won't win The Open Championship

But the Spaniard knew exactly what went wrong after he posted his best performance in a major championship this year at Royal Troon.

Rahm came into the final round on Sunday knowing a round in the low 60s would be enough to have a chance of glory.

He came racing out of the blocks, birdieing three out of his first four holes by the Scottish coast.

Rahm added another birdie at the 7th but made a costly bogey three holes later after hitting his tee shot at the Railway miles right.

From there, the momentum had gone and he made eight consecutive pars to post a final round of 3-under 68 to finish on 1-under.

It means that it is best finish in a major this season having failed to contend at the 2024 Masters and had a forgettable PGA Championship

A foot infection also meant he was forced to withdraw from the US Open on the eve of the major at Pinehurst No.2.

Rahm knew exactly what went wrong.

"The one thing I keep thinking about all week is the fact that I didn't birdie a single par-5," Rahm said.

"I can't remember the last time I played good golf, possibly finished top-10, and not birdied a single par-5. In fact, I played them 3-over par.

"That's where I think basically where the tournament might have been for me."

So what else went wrong?

"I just didn't strike those iron shots good enough to give myself good birdie looks," he said.

"I had a lot of long putts for birdie, and then the few closer ones that I had I didn't make.

"But I did make two really lengthy par putts on the last two holes, so it all evens out."

Rahm will now turn his attentions to LIV Golf's event in the UK next week.

The breakaway tour heads to JCB Golf & Country Club for the very first time.

Rahm is yet to win a LIV event since joining the league last December.
