"Surely, come on..." Reporter questions (?!) Xander Schauffele's response at US PGA

A reporter has questioned Xander Schauffele's response about what winning a maiden major title would really mean to him should he be victorious at the US PGA at Valhalla on Sunday. 

Schauffele, 30, holds a share of the 54-hole lead at Valhalla alongside his US Ryder Cup teammate Collin Morikawa.

Many golf fans and pundits consider Schauffele is the best player on the PGA Tour without a major to his name, and the OWGR would appear to reflect that with the American ranked third in the world. 

Schauffele is also coming up to two years since his last win on the PGA Tour.

He has chalked up 21 top-10 finishes on the circuit since his last victory at the 2022 Genesis Scottish Open. 

A number of fans have slammed Schauffele for being a bit of 'choker' when it comes to the biggest tournaments. 

Schauffele has hit back at such claims. 

Schauffele was pressed by one reporter as to what it would really mean to him to finally close the deal on a major championship after his third round on Saturday. 

While the seven-time PGA Tour winner admits it would 'mean a lot' to him if he is to finally capture a first major at the US PGA Championship, he concluded 'winning a tournament is just a result'. 

A number of golf fans have questioned Schauffele's response, and so too did the reporter who posed the question.

Q. Winning Olympic Gold of course is very special, very prestigious, but I'm wondering what would a first major title mean to you, your friends, your family? 

Schauffele: "It would mean a lot. At the end of the day, it's just a result. Winning a tournament is just a result. All I can focus on are good golf shots and striking good putts. At the end of the day, wherever the cards fall, they fall. Yeah, it would mean a lot, obviously."

Q. It's more than just a result, though, surely, come on. 

Schauffele: "It really is just a result. But yeah, like I said, it would mean a ton."

DP World Tour pro Eddie Pepperell reacted to Schauffele's answer and said he thinks the American will win the US PGA on Sunday.

Pepperell tweeted:

"Different levels, admittedly, but back in 2016 when I threw away a chance to win my first event on ET, I thought similar stuff to this. But once I won, that changed and winning added so much more than I thought it would. Once Xander knocks off his 1st major (today!), watch out."
