Red-faced PGA Tour pro makes outrageous golf ball claim following last round

PGA Tour Champions pro Greg Chalmers has revealed he lost four golf balls - all within the rope line - during his practice round at this week's Senior Open at Carnoustie.

Chalmers, 50, is competing in his first Senior Open this week. 

If the Australian's early comments are anything to go by then players will need to find the short grass in order to be successful this week.

Chalmers admitted to making the 'rookie mistake' of taking just six balls out there with him for his first practice round, especially at Carnoustie, which many pros consider the toughest links on the R&A's Open rota. 

The one-time PGA Tour winner took to X / Twitter to reveal something we can all relate to with him being left with just two golf balls in his bag with three holes to play during his last practice round at Carnoustie. 

Chalmers admitted he wasn't even that wild from the tee, either.

All four of his lost golf balls were inside the spectator rope line. 

Chalmers tweeted: 

"Just played a practice round at Carnoustie… made the rookie mistake of only taking 6 balls with me..lost 4 (all inside the rope line) and still 3 holes to go. Not sure I’ll make it."

It is understood Chalmers didn't need to nip over to the pro shop before the 18th.

Chalmers has enjoyed a fairly solid rookie season on the PGA Tour Champions with four top-10 finishes in nine starts in 2024. 

The highlight result was a solo third in his first senior major start at the Senior PGA Championship. 

Chalmers played in The Open four times during his career with his best finish a T45 coming at Royal Lytham & St Annes in 2012.

He never played in The Open at Carnoustie. 

Chalmers has won five times on his home circuit and once on the PGA Tour at the Barracuda Championship in 2016.

He is a 50/1 shot to win The Senior Open.

Padraig Harrington is a warm 4/1 favourite to win The Senior Open this week.

Steven Alker and Stephen Ames are next in the betting market.

Alex Cejka is the defending champion having defeated Harrington in a playoff at Royal Porthcawl last season.

Bernhard Langer is also in the field. The German will look to win a record fifth Senior Open title, having claimed the Senior Open trophy for the fourth time in 2019 at Royal Lytham & St Annes. 

Langer, 66, is the most decorated over-50s golfer of all-time, with 12 senior majors to his name, including both previous Senior Opens held at Royal Porthcawl

Ernie Els was due to compete in The Senior Open but he has been forced to withdraw due to a back injury sustained at The Open last week.
