Scheffler plays his chip shot from the back of the 2nd

A young patron was seen taking full authority of a rules situation involving eventual Masters champion Scottie Scheffler in the final round at Augusta National.

Scheffler, 27, sailed his third shot over the back of the green at the par-5 2nd and his ball came to rest in the intermediate rough where the patrons had trampled down the grass.

When Scheffler got to his ball, it was located under a fold-up Masters seat.

It was a fiddly little shot that played all downhill to the pin.

As Scheffler set up to his ball and shuffled in to play the chip shot, he backed off believing he had possibly made the ball move.

Scheffler turned to his caddie Ted Scott said: "I just touched my ball."

As Scheffler looked around and questioned whether the ball had moved from its original spot, a number of patrons were heard muttering several comments.

A young patron then said with complete authority: "It didn't move!"

Everyone then seemingly went 'okay cool'.

Under the rules of golf, if you touch a golf ball with your club then it can oscillate in its own spot with no penalty.

But if you cause the golf ball to move away from its original spot once you have addressed it then it is deemed you caused the ball to move and that incurs a one-stroke penalty.

Scheffler continued where he left off without penalty and played a brilliant chip shot to some six feet.

He converted the par putt and then went on to shoot a 68 to capture his second Masters.

Scheffler wins a second Masters in three years

Scheffler finished the week on 11-under par and four shots clear of Ludvig Aberg, who finished runner-up on his Masters debut.

The win marks a third in the last four starts for Scheffler on the PGA Tour.

Scheffler becomes the first player since Bubba Watson in 2014 to win two Masters in the space of three years.
