Hilarious footage has been shared by the DP World Tour of a dog running off with Gareth Bale's golf ball during the second round of the Dunhill Links.

The incident happened while Bale was playing a chip shot onto a green at Carnoustie.

Bale, 35, played a solid pitch shot to some 10 feet.

But he was soon left in shock as a dog got off its lead and ran onto the green.

The dog popped Bale's TaylorMade TP5 Stripe into its mouth and then ran back across the green.

Thankfully the former Real Madrid and Spurs winger was able to retrieve his ball from the dog and replace his ball where it ended up on the green.

'Brilliant, at least it brought it back. Good dog,' tweeted one fan.

Another was less impressed: 'Another irresponsible dog owner. Control your dog, put it on a lead. It should not be at a golf tournament in any case.'

Bale is playing alongside Tour pro Dan Brown this week.

The duo opened with a superb 13-under par round on the Old Course at St Andrews on Thursday.

But they could only manage a 6-under par round at Carnoustie.

They are currently just outside the top 20 heading into the weekend.

Bale has always loved playing golf but he now gets to play even more of it.

He recently teed it up in the BMW PGA Pro-Am at Wentworth, and he is once again back on the DP World Tour at this week's Dunhill Links Pro-Am.

Bale's current handicap is 0.5.

Rory McIlroy last year said that Bale had the potential to make it big in the game if he keeps up the practice.
